PSC Conducts Promotion Exams for Senior Police Officers, Warns Against Bribery

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Friday continued its mandatory promotion examinations for senior officers, underscoring the tests as crucial for restoring credibility, enhancing professionalism, and improving the public image of the Nigeria Police Force.

Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC, confirmed that 630 Deputy Superintendents of Police were examined for promotion to the rank of Superintendent at the Commission’s Parry Osayande Auditorium, Corporate Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja. He described the exercise as part of the PSC’s drive to make promotions transparent and merit-based.

The examinations were formally opened by Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Supreme Court Justice and the Commission’s representative for the Judiciary.

Speaking during the event, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), chairman of the PSC’s Standing Committee on Police Matters, said the exams were “timely and necessary” and would help restore the Force’s image. He added that systemic challenges have undermined public perception of the police, noting, “We have decided to institute examinations. If you fail, you fail. This process will strengthen the integrity and professionalism of the Force.”

Lakanu also issued a stern warning to officers against attempting to bribe PSC staff, stating, “Any officer caught offering bribes will be turned away. Do not embarrass yourselves or the Commission.”

PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu, reiterated the significance of merit-based promotions, stressing that the exams ensure respect and credibility for officers attaining new ranks. He said, “The Police of our dream should be able to operate with minimal supervision and deliver results without undue influence.”

The Commission’s promotion exams and interviews for officers in the Commissioner cadre are set to continue next week, with a plenary meeting scheduled later this month. These measures are part of broader reforms aimed at professionalising the Force, strengthening accountability, and restoring public trust in the Nigeria Police.

In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force has disowned a viral notice circulating on social media announcing a recruitment exercise scheduled for September 22, 2025. The purported notice, inviting applications from SSCE, OND, HND, and B.Sc. holders, has been declared fraudulent.
