Ajase-Ipo Defies Kwara Councils on Cattle Market Ban

The Ajase-Ipo community in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has rejected the directive by seven council chairmen in Kwara South Senatorial District to shut down cattle markets over security concerns.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ajase-Ipo Descendants Union (ADU) said the Kara Market in the town would remain open on the orders of the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ismail Yahaya Atoloye Muhammed.

The monarch described the market as a vital hub of commerce and livelihood, stressing that traders and buyers must be allowed to conduct their activities without hindrance.

ADU’s National Public Relations Officer, Balogun Monsuru Alabi, faulted the council chairmen for acting without consulting traditional rulers of the affected communities.

“The recent decision to unilaterally shut down Kara markets across Kwara South without due consultation with traditional institutions is reckless, undemocratic, and unacceptable,” the union said.

It reminded the council chairmen that “they are not military administrators” and must respect established protocols in governance.

The community reaffirmed its commitment to peace and urged residents to support security agencies by being vigilant and reporting suspicious activities.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Malam Shehu Garba, also condemned the closure order, describing it as hasty and taken without input from stakeholders.

He called on the state government to intervene to prevent hardship for cattle dealers and the wider community.
