Wike Blasts Jonathan’s 2027 Promoters
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has lambasted politicians pushing for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, accusing them of hypocrisy.
Speaking last night on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike said those behind the campaign were the same people who betrayed Jonathan in 2015.
“Anybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for a crisis,” he declared. “These are the same people who frustrated him in 2015. Jonathan has made a name for himself globally; they just want to drag him into unnecessary conflict.”
The minister warned that fronting Jonathan or any southern candidate under the guise of a “one-term presidency” was a dangerous ploy that could destabilise Nigeria’s political balance.
On the economy, Wike admitted Nigerians were facing hardship but defended President Bola Tinubu, saying his administration had taken “tough but necessary decisions” to reposition the country.
“Yes, there is hardship, I agree. But no one can deny that this government is making efforts to improve things. I see the projects in Abuja daily; they are evidence that something is happening,” he said.
Wike also dismissed concerns about Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s absence, stressing that governance was not restricted to physical presence in the office.
“I am not his protocol officer. There is no law that says he must resume work today. Governance does not mean one must be in the office to govern,” he argued.
The minister added that peace had returned to Rivers, noting he was in touch with the governor.
“As of yesterday, I spoke to the governor. He told me he was leaving this morning. By the grace of God, peace has returned,” Wike said.
