Sokoto Assembly Urges Rapid Flood Assessment, Relief for Affected Communities

Sokoto – The Sokoto State House of Assembly has called on the state government and relevant agencies to undertake an immediate assessment and provide urgent relief to communities affected by flooding in Gada, Kebbe, and Dange/Shuni local government areas.

The resolution was adopted during plenary on Wednesday following a joint motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Kabiru Dauda (APC–Gada East), Sama’ila Hamisu (APC–Kebbe), and Sirajo Shuni (APC–Dange/Shuni).

Lawmakers expressed concern over the extensive damage caused by the floods, which destroyed farmlands, displaced residents, and damaged homes and infrastructure. In Gada LGA, crops including millet, maize, guinea corn, beans, onions, and peppers were submerged, while villages in Kebbe, such as Bashi, Fakku, Margai, and Kuchi, suffered significant damage. In Dange/Shuni, residents of Dambuwa and Shuni communities were rendered homeless.

The House urged the state government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate relief materials to affected areas. Lawmakers also recommended the implementation of long-term preventive measures, including erosion control and community sensitisation campaigns, to mitigate future flood risks.

In a separate resolution, the assembly directed the contractor handling the 38-kilometre Gada–Illela road to appear before its committee over alleged project abandonment, which residents say has rendered the road impassable during the rainy season.
