Osun APC Implodes: Power Struggle Threatens 2026 Governorship
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is in chaos. A bitter fight over the party’s 2026 governorship ticket has erupted into open conflict, threatening to split the party ahead of the elections.
Reports claim state chairman Tajudeen Lawal is under threat of removal. Unconfirmed sources say he has been replaced by former Commissioner for Information, Sunday Akere a move insiders describe as reckless and divisive.
Former Commissioner Adebayo Adeleke, who served under ex-Governor Gboyega Oyetola, condemned the alleged plot in a viral video. “This is madness. You cannot destroy the party over selfish ambition,” Adeleke said. He warned that the crisis could hand an easy victory to opposition parties.
Some APC chieftains insist leadership restructuring is necessary. “We need new energy if the party hopes to win in 2026,” one insider said. Others accuse aspirants of plotting a power grab at the expense of party unity.
At least 10 aspirants are jostling for the governorship ticket, including Bola Oyebamiji, Akin Ogunbiyi, Kunle Rasheed Adegoke, Dotun Babayemi, Iyiola Omisore, Ajibola Basiru, Jide Omoworare, Mudashiru Hussein, and Benedict Alabi. Analysts warn that the struggle could escalate into a full-blown internal war.
Opposition parties, particularly the PDP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are closely monitoring the crisis. Analysts believe the outcome could determine who wins Osun in 2026.
Urgent calls for dialogue are emerging. “Personal ambitions must not jeopardize the party’s future. Time is running out,” said a senior party source on condition of anonymity.
With the governorship race approaching, all eyes are on Osun APC. Will it mend its divisions in time, or will internal chaos hand victory to its rivals?
