Plateau Governor Warns Judges: You Will Also Be Judged

 

 

 

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has cautioned judges in the state to uphold the highest standards of integrity and fairness, reminding them that while they have the authority to judge others, they too will ultimately be held accountable by their Creator.

 

The governor spoke at the 2025/2026 Legal Year Ceremony of the Plateau State High Court of Justice, held at the high court premises in Jos on Tuesday.

 

“You had been on recess, and you are now back to face your duties for the next year. I believe the time of recess has been effectively utilised for reflection, rejuvenation, and a renewed commitment to justice,” Mutfwang said.

 

He commended the judiciary for maintaining professionalism and avoiding public criticism. “I am not aware of many bad stories about the Plateau judiciary. I want to commend the Plateau judiciary for not allowing itself to become the subject of public discourse and public opprobrium. I hope that in this coming year, we will recommit ourselves to ensuring that the justice sector in Plateau State remains one of the best in Nigeria,” the governor added.

 

Highlighting the delicate nature of their work, Mutfwang said, “Our judges are in a very unique position, tasked with dispensing justice to victims, society, and the state. While you stand in a position to judge others, remember that you yourselves will be judged. Our prayer is that when your own judgment comes, you may stand before your Creator with a clear conscience.”

 

He urged judges to exercise judicial discretion wisely, guided by ethical principles, fear of God, and wisdom, ensuring that in the process of dispensing justice, they do not become entangled themselves.

 

Mutfwang also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the judiciary. “Since coming on board, we have treated with utmost priority all requests from the judiciary, within the constraints of our funding, to support the progress and development of Plateau State,” he said.

 

On the security situation in the state, the governor acknowledged ongoing challenges but assured citizens of government action. “Yes, the security challenges have confronted us, and we continue to seek wisdom and better ways to address the situation. In the next two weeks, we will recruit additional personnel into Operation Rainbow to strengthen security. I urge our citizens to provide credible intelligence to assist in these efforts,” Mutfwang stated.

 

The governor concluded by calling on all stakeholders to renew their commitment to the development of Plateau State, emphasizing that collaboration between the judiciary and the executive is key to safeguarding public resources and promoting justice.
