Ogun Raises Alarm as Diphtheria Cases Surge in State

Ogun State has recorded a sharp rise in diphtheria cases, prompting the State Ministry of Health to issue a public alert. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, on Tuesday, warned residents to take precautionary measures to curb the spread of the disease.

Nigeria has been grappling with recurring diphtheria outbreaks since May 2022, initially reported in Kano and other northern states. According to official figures, the infection has claimed over 1,300 lives nationwide as of May 2025, highlighting its status as one of the country’s persistent public health challenges.

Diphtheria, largely controlled in the past through routine childhood immunisations, has re-emerged in communities with low vaccine coverage and limited access to healthcare.

Dr. Coker explained that diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or close contact. “Common symptoms include sore throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, swollen neck, and a thick grey or white coating in the throat or nose. Untreated cases can lead to severe complications and death,” she noted.

She urged residents to observe the following preventive measures:

Ensure vaccination: Children should receive all recommended routine immunisations. Adults who missed earlier vaccines should also get protected.

Maintain hygiene: Regular handwashing and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing are essential.

Avoid contact with the sick: Anyone showing diphtheria-like symptoms should be kept at a safe distance and referred to a healthcare facility.

Seek early treatment: Prompt reporting to the nearest health centre is crucial; self-medication should be avoided.

Stay informed: Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from the State Ministry of Health and avoid spreading unverified information.

Dr. Coker reassured the public that the state government, in partnership with development partners, is actively working to contain the outbreak and appealed for citizens’ cooperation.
