UNN bans night events after fatal stabbing on campus

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has imposed restrictions on campus social gatherings, directing that no event should extend beyond 6 p.m., following the killing of a businessman during a student programme.

The decision was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, who said the measure became necessary to strengthen security and forestall similar tragedies.

The restriction follows the death of Mr. Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, who was stabbed to death on September 12 during a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

According to the university authorities, the event, which was meant to be a harmless student celebration, was hijacked by hoodlums from a nearby community who instigated violence, leading to the fatal incident.

Egwu said: “In light of what happened, management has directed that all social events on campus must now take place only in the daytime, under the supervision of the University Security Unit. No event of this nature will be allowed to continue past 6:00 p.m. on any of our campuses.”

The university described the incident as “tragic and avoidable” and assured students, staff, and the public of its commitment to maintaining a safe environment for academic and social activities.
