Kwara NUT Issues Warning Over Pending Teachers’ Allowances

 

Public school teachers in Kwara State, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have formally notified Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of their intention to embark on industrial action if long-standing demands are not addressed.

 

In a letter dated September 10, 2025, and signed by the state chairman of the NUT, Comrade Yusuf Agboola, alongside the deputy secretary-general, Moni Mike Modesty Itua, the teachers urged the governor to approve the full implementation of the 27.5 per cent and 21 per cent Teachers Specific Allowances (TSA) “without any form of adulteration.”

 

The union noted that meeting the demands was critical to sustaining industrial peace and preserving the cordial working relationship between government and public school teachers in the state.

 

Copies of the letter were also sent to the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, the chairman of the House Committee on Education, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, the State Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the chairmen of the State Universal Basic Education Board and Teaching Service Commission, the Special Adviser on Labour, as well as the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the NUT national secretariat.

 

Earlier this week, the union had declared a day of fasting and prayer across the state, seeking divine intervention over the unresolved demands. In a separate statement, referenced NUT/KWSW/PRESS/067/VOL.1/16, the teachers explained that the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting where it was also agreed that a formal ultimatum would be issued to the state government as a prelude to a possible strike.

 

The union dissociated itself from social media calls for a protest, stressing that it remains committed to dialogue but is concerned about what it described as “the graveyard silence” of the government on the matter.

 

“The leadership of the NUT in Kwara has made every genuine effort to engage government constructively. However, the failure to implement the 27.5% and 21% Teachers Specific Allowances has left teachers with no option but to consider further actions,” the statement read.

 

The union appealed to its members to remain calm and await further directives, while reiterating its commitment to the welfare of teachers and the stability of the education sector in Kwara State.
