2027: Jonathan Unlikely to Contest Under PDP, Says Dele Momodu

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has dismissed speculations that former President Goodluck Jonathan may return to the ballot in 2027 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise programme on Friday, Momodu argued that entrenched interests within the PDP remain opposed to Jonathan’s comeback, making the prospect of his candidacy unlikely.

He cautioned against misinterpreting routine political interactions, noting that Jonathan’s recent meeting with former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, did not signal an alliance.

“Those saying Jonathan will contest on the PDP platform, I doubt it,” Momodu said. “Those who are determined to kill PDP are still very much entrenched. As for meetings with Peter Obi or others, politicians meet all the time.”

Momodu further pointed to public reactions to a recent meeting between Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and President Bola Tinubu as evidence of Nigeria’s tendency toward speculation in politics.

“This is not the time to speculate,” he said. “It is a time to focus and strategize. In a democracy, if there is no consensus, let there be primaries. Whoever emerges should be accepted.”
