Niger partners AfricaRice to boost rice output

The Niger State government has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting rice production through a strategic partnership with AfricaRice.

A delegation from AfricaRice was in Minna, the state capital, to assess preparedness for the collaboration, which was sealed in July. The initiative targets an increase in Niger’s annual paddy rice output from 1.5 million metric tonnes to 10 million metric tonnes by 2030.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago described the partnership as a major step towards cutting rice importation by about 70 per cent, creating jobs, improving revenue and enhancing the socio-economic wellbeing of citizens.

He said: “AfricaRice is an inspiration, and with this partnership, we are set to harness our full agricultural potential, especially in rice production.”

The Director-General of AfricaRice, Dr. Baboucarr Manneh, commended the governor’s commitment to agriculture, noting that the political will being demonstrated would translate the state’s ambition into reality.

According to him, AfricaRice will provide expertise in research, seedlings, and extension services to ensure sustainability and rice self-sufficiency.

Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi, who also lent his voice, stressed the importance of strengthening local rice production to secure food supply and stabilise the economy.

The partnership, stakeholders said, is expected to boost food security, conserve foreign exchange, and strengthen the naira.
