Eno partners REA, pledges 24-hour power supply in A’Ibom
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has restated his administration’s commitment to delivering round-the-clock electricity supply across the state.
The governor said the move followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) on rural power projects aimed at lighting up underserved and unserved communities.
Eno, who participated in the REA Roundtable in Abuja before travelling to the United Kingdom, said the partnership was designed to bring lasting solutions to power challenges in the state.
On his return from the UK yesterday, the governor told Government House correspondents at the Victor Attah International Airport that the state would host a Power Summit on September 18 and 19 in collaboration with REA.
He said:
> “It buttresses the fact that we must give Akwa Ibomites a 24/7 reliable power supply. As you are aware, we have our Electricity Power Summit on the 18th and 19th of this month; this is a prelude.
“We are working with the Rural Electrification Agency, which has funding to bring power to the underserved and unserved communities in Akwa Ibom State that cannot be linked to the national grid.”
Eno noted that reliable power supply was central to his administration’s drive to industrialise the state, enhance ease of doing business and reduce dependence on diesel generators.
While in the UK, the governor also met with British-based heavyweight boxing champion, Moses Itauma, and the Mayor of Islington, Utiofon Jackson, both indigenes of Akwa Ibom.
He described them as role models, saying their achievements were worthy of emulation by the younger generation.
According to him:
> “Part of my visit to the UK was to meet with Moses Itauma, the boxing champion, and also the Mayor of Islington, Utiofon Jackson, who is from Ika Local Government. These two have done well; they have excelled. We needed to take the good wishes of Akwa Ibomites to them and encourage them.”
Eno emphasised that his government would continue to identify and celebrate Akwa Ibom indigenes excelling in various fields across the world, stressing that their success stories showed that with the right support system, the state could produce world-class achievers.
The governor added that the ongoing power drive would not only boost industrial activities but also support youth empowerment, job creation and economic growth in the state.
He stressed that the initiative aligns with his Arise Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure development, economic expansion and youth empowerment, noting that a 24-hour electricity supply will accelerate Akwa Ibom’s journey towards industrialisation and global competitiveness.
