Niger State Moves to Curb Vandalism and Theft by Scrap Dealers

The Niger State Government has initiated measures to tackle the growing menace of vandalism and theft of public and private properties, often carried out by individuals masquerading as scrap dealers.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago convened a meeting with the leadership of the state chapter of the Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria at the Government House in Minna. He expressed concern over the persistent destruction of buildings and theft of valuables, warning that the government would no longer tolerate such criminal activities.

The governor urged the association’s leaders to identify genuine members and help root out criminals operating under the guise of scrap trading. He also announced plans for a wider stakeholder meeting across all 25 local government areas, alongside security agencies, to review operational guidelines. An executive bill will be sent to the State Assembly to regulate the association, with violators facing prosecution.

Mallam Mohammed Ahmed, chairman of the state chapter, disclosed that the association intends to introduce uniforms and identity cards to curb malpractice. He also highlighted challenges, including resistance from some local councils to register and inadequate funding to mobilise the association’s task force.

Ahmed commended the governor’s initiative and called for continued government support to halt the circulation of stolen scrap materials in the state.
