The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned against the registration of underage Nigerians during the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, describing such attempts as illegal and unacceptable.

Dr. Mutiu Agboke, Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, disclosed this while speaking on The Dialogue programme on Dynasty 89.9 FM, Oyo. He reiterated that only citizens aged 18 years and above are eligible to register.

“The commission is impressed with citizens and stakeholders mobilising for civic participation,” Agboke said. “However, we have observed a number of underage Nigerians attempting to register. They will not be allowed. It is illegal for anyone to encourage underage registration, even if they expect to reach the legal voting age by the 2027 general elections.”

Agboke called on stakeholders to support INEC in curbing underage registration and addressing other operational challenges.

On reports regarding Osun State’s figures in the online pre-registration exercise, the commissioner dismissed them as “baseless and unfounded,” attributing the success to the Commission’s early preparation, sensitisation, and mobilisation efforts.

“The commission remains committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible 2026 governorship election in Osun State,” he added.
