Yusuf Sets Up Shura Council to Curb Drug Abuse, Youth Violence
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has inaugurated the Kano State Shura Council, a body of Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, and community leaders tasked with tackling drug abuse, political thuggery, and moral decline among youths.
Speaking at the inauguration in Government House, Kano, the governor said the council would guide his administration on social transformation, while also working with Friday Imams to preach peace and unity.
Yusuf noted that clerics and traditional leaders wield stronger moral authority than politicians, whose time in office is short. He assured that his government would not interfere in religious matters but would rely on the council to restore values and redirect young people.
“The NNPP-led government places priority on promoting Islam and moral reorientation. This council will help us bring back discipline and strengthen peaceful coexistence,” the governor said.
The council, made up of respected Islamic scholars, business leaders, and traditional rulers across sects, will serve as an inclusive platform to revive the role of religious and cultural institutions in shaping society.
Wazirin Kano, Sheikh Sa’ad Shehu, who spoke on behalf of the members, thanked the governor for the trust reposed in them, describing the assignment as enormous. He prayed for divine wisdom to discharge their duties effectively.
Secretary of the council and Commissioner for Commerce, Investment and Industry, Shehu Sagagi, said the membership was based on merit, not political influence.
The inauguration comes against the backdrop of rising drug abuse in the North-West. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency recently revealed that about three million people in the region abuse drugs, with Kano recording the highest prevalence rate at 16 percent.
