Obi to FG: Declare War on Insecurity Now
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to immediately declare a national war on insecurity, warning that the killings across the country now rival those of war-torn nations.
Obi, in a statement yesterday, described the weekend attacks in Borno, Sokoto, Katsina and Edo States, where over 100 people were killed, as further proof that Nigeria is under siege. Victims included eight officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), five soldiers, and dozens of civilians. A Chinese national was also abducted in Edo, while travellers were kidnapped along the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road.
“These are not isolated tragedies. They show clearly that Nigeria is in the grip of a full-blown security emergency,” Obi said, adding that urgent and decisive action was required. He called on the government to mobilise every resource, every agency, and every state to confront the menace head-on.
The former Anambra governor also criticised government officials for “chasing foreign trips” while insecurity worsens at home. “True leadership must be seen here, personally coordinating the fight. Investors will not come into a war zone,” he declared.
Obi warned that Nigeria risked the fate of Somalia and Libya if leaders failed to act with urgency. He insisted that restoring peace and order was the first condition for national recovery. “We must act now, with courage, to reclaim our country from lawlessness,” he said.
