Thugs Invade Aregbesola-led ADC Rally, APC Denies Role

A rally organised on Saturday by the Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), under the leadership of former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, descended into chaos after suspected political thugs stormed the venue in Alimosho Local Government Area.

The event, held at Lion Field, was set to feature the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, alongside Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. Organisers said the rally aimed to sensitise residents on the importance of securing their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections and to mobilise young people for the voter registration exercise.

Eyewitnesses recounted that shortly after the programme began, hoodlums invaded the venue, dispersing participants and inflicting injuries on some. Police officers deployed to the scene were reportedly overwhelmed as attendees fled in panic. As of press time, no arrests had been made.

Reacting to the incident, Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, denied any involvement by the ruling party, describing the allegations as attempts by the opposition to mask its internal difficulties.

“The opposition is not helping democracy by attributing its internal rifts to the ruling party,” Oladejo said. “As the governing party, the APC remains committed to peace and stability in the state. We see no threat from the opposition and reject attempts to drag us into their setbacks. Their desperation is already a pointer to their imminent electoral defeat in 2027.”

He further urged law enforcement agencies to ensure calm while reiterating APC’s denial of responsibility for the attack.
