Adeyanju Warns DSS: Stop Using State Power to Gag Critics

Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has criticised the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly targeting the social media account of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement on Sunday, Adeyanju described the action as “unacceptable” and a direct assault on democratic freedoms.

“The targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the DSS is unacceptable and should be condemned. Every citizen has the right to freely share their opinions, even when those opinions do not align with those in authority,” he said.

He warned that silencing dissent through intimidation undermines the foundations of democracy.

“The use of state power to silence and intimidate individuals because of their views is an attack on the very freedoms that sustain a healthy democracy,” Adeyanju stated.

According to him, Sowore has consistently suffered persecution under intolerant governments but continues to speak out courageously despite the risks.

“Sowore has remained a victim of intolerant governments, yet he continues to speak his mind courageously. He is not just an activist but also a former presidential candidate whose commentary on governance carries weight,” he added.

Adeyanju urged the government and its security agencies to handle criticisms with respect rather than clamp down on dissenting voices.

“His criticisms of the president or government policies must be treated with respect, no matter how uncomfortable they may be for those in power,” the activist stressed.

Reaffirming his commitment to defending free expression, Adeyanju warned that any attempt to suppress Sowore or other dissenters would be resisted by pro-democracy voices.
