Plateau SIEC Assures Stakeholders of Credible Council Elections

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced that local government elections will be held across the 17 councils of the state on September 1, 2026.

Chairman of the commission, Plangji Cishak, disclosed this in Jos on Thursday while unveiling the election timetable. He explained that the announcement was in line with the legal requirement of giving 360 days’ notice before polls.

“As you are aware, the tenure of local government officials in Plateau State is two years. The law stipulates that notice of elections shall be given 360 days before the exercise. I am happy to inform you that we have complied with the provisions of the law,” he said.

Cishak outlined the schedule of activities, stating that party primaries, including the resolution of disputes, will hold between January 12 and 30, 2026. Collection of nomination forms by political parties is scheduled for February 2 to 6, while submission of completed forms will run until March 2. Campaigns are expected to end on August 30, 2026, two days before the polls.

The commission chairman assured political parties and the public of a transparent and credible exercise, pledging to work closely with stakeholders to ensure the success of the elections.

The last local government polls in Plateau were conducted in OPctober 2024.
