Reps Probe 11 Electricity Discos Over N2.6 Trillion Debt

Abuja, 20 August 2025 – The House of Representatives’ Public Accounts Committee has summoned 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) over an outstanding N2.6 trillion owed to the federation account.

The summons follows a review of the 2021 Auditor-General’s report, which flagged significant irregularities in the power sector. The hearing, chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam, heard from NBET Managing Director Johnson Akinnawo, who confirmed the massive liabilities.

The debt is distributed among the Discos as follows: AEDC – N330.4bn; Eko – N231bn; Benin – N233.2bn; Enugu – N258.3bn; Ibadan – N325.7bn; Ikeja – N310bn; Jos – N161.7bn; Kaduna – N277.7bn; Kano – N211.7bn; Port Harcourt – N239.7bn; Yola – N107.4bn.

The Auditor-General’s report further identified:

N30bn uncollected by NBET from market operators

N549m shortfall in NBET’s institutional charges

N100bn paid for undelivered electricity

N26bn owed by two foreign firms for exported power

N166bn under-remitted by Discos

N2.7bn in unpaid invoices

Following deliberations, a motion by Hon. Yahya Kusada, seconded by Hon. Billy Osawaru, directed all 11 Discos to appear before the committee to explain the debt and present repayment plans.

“With liabilities of this magnitude, these companies must clarify their positions and outline how they intend to settle their obligations,” Hon. Kusada said.

The Committee also resolved to summon other market operators and stakeholders to address issues raised in the Auditor-General’s report.
