Anambra Guber: Obi to Lead Labour Party Campaign as Moghalu Unveils 21 LG Campaign Councils: By Aloysius Attah, Onitsha

The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has dispelled speculations that its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). LP’s gubernatorial candidate, Chief George Moghalu, confirmed that Obi remains firmly in the party and will lead its governorship campaign.

The clarification followed concerns sparked by Obi’s recent appearance at the campaign rally of the ADC State Assembly candidate for the Onitsha North 1 by-election scheduled for this weekend. Addressing the matter in Awka during the inauguration of LP’s 21 Local Government Area Campaign Councils, Moghalu said Obi had already explained his reasons for attending the ADC rally.

“We shall begin our campaign tour of all 21 local government areas after the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election and the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency election,” Moghalu announced.

He explained that the Labour Party faced some internal challenges over the by-election, prompting Obi’s show of support for the ADC candidate. “Our presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, made it clear that due to minimal issues within our party regarding the by-election, he decided to support the ADC candidate,” Moghalu stated.

According to him, Obi has assured party members that once the by-election is over, he will not only launch the LP gubernatorial campaign but also personally lead the candidate and his running mate across the state.

“This should put all fears to rest—Peter Obi remains a committed member of the Labour Party and will spearhead our campaign,” Moghalu stressed.

Inaugurating the campaign councils, Moghalu emphasised that the upcoming election must reflect the true will of the Anambra electorate. “The votes must count, and we must protect them. When we make rigging impossible, nobody can manipulate the results,” he said.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Moghalu Campaign Organisation, Arch. Okey Chukwuogo, explained that the councils were established to serve as the “eyes and ears” of the candidate at the grassroots, urging members to intensify mobilisation efforts.

The LP State Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Emeh, described the governorship race as a “make-or-break” contest, stressing that victory would require not just supporting the candidate but also winning over new supporters across the state.
