Tinubu’s Two-Year Achievements Surpass PDP’s First Eight Years — Bwala
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has asserted that the President’s accomplishments in his first two years in office outweigh the achievements of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its initial eight years in power (1999–2007).
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, Bwala argued that Tinubu assumed leadership under significantly tougher conditions than the PDP faced when it came into power in 1999, yet has delivered notable progress in the economy, security, and governance.
He noted that while the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua benefited from foreign debt forgiveness, Tinubu’s government has had to service and repay inherited debts.
On the oil sector, Bwala compared the high production levels between 1999 and 2007 to the current challenges, stating that Tinubu inherited a struggling output but has managed to navigate the sector’s difficulties.
Bwala also recalled that in 1999, Nigeria enjoyed international goodwill, sympathy, and support after emerging from military rule. In contrast, Tinubu has had to prove himself amid more complex global and domestic conditions.
He further claimed that insecurity, which was relatively low in 1999, worsened under PDP leadership, leading to the emergence of Boko Haram. According to him, Tinubu’s administration has, within two years, significantly degraded insecurity and charted a path toward ending it.
On economic reforms, Bwala said successive presidents avoided taking the tough decisions necessary to address structural problems, but Tinubu “took the bullet,” implementing measures that are now aiding recovery.
“The hallmark of a true leader is in his ability to take courageous decisions at the right time,” Bwala wrote.
